First aid management of infants and children is the central focus of HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting.

The most common infant and child conditions (diarrhoea, dehydration, fever, febrile convulsion and vomiting) are all additional subjects of this course which also covers ALL the content of HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. 

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is taught in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and is Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) approved. 

 HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting leads to an accredited and industry recognised Childcare First Aid and CPR qualification in:

  • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid 
  • HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

Why do I need Childcare First Aid?

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting in most instances meets or contributes towards first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma training requirements under the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

It is also approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

How do I get qualified for Childcare First Aid?

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is a mix of knowledge (theory) and practical (skills).

The knowledge assessment is completed in-class when doing the Face-to-Face course.

The knowledge assessment is completed online when doing the Learning Online course.

Please note: Practical assessment is completed in-class for both courses as practical skills must be displayed in the presence of a qualified first aid trainer.

 

How do I do Childcare First Aid Learning Online?

Learning Online includes an independent element where learners complete the first past of the course (knowledge assessment) online through their secure student portal (Vasto) before coming to a shortened in-class practical session to finish the last part of the course (practical assessment) with a qualified childcare first aid trainer.

Childcare First Aid Training Requirements 

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid is an entry-level course available to students of all backgrounds and experience levels. 

It is an accredited and practical course, though, so all we ask is that you can:

  • Prove you are over 18
  • Provide guardian or parental consent if under 18 (must be at least 14)
  • Confirm you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident 
  • Read and write 
  • Communicate verbally with others
  • Perform basic manual tasks

  • A child with a dislocated shoulder (cold compress)
  • A child with a sprained ankle (RICER)
  • A child with a nosebleed (apply pressure, lean forward)
  • A child with an unknown condition (DRSABCD)

 

You will also be assessed on your ability to: 

  • Identify when to provide first aid
  • Follow DRSABCD protocol 
  • Complete incident reports
  • Handover to emergency services
